Niger

1. Country / Territory Brief

Niger is a LDC and the geographically largest country in West Africa. Its economy is essentially based on internal markets,

subsistence agriculture, and the export of raw commodities: food stuffs to neighbouring countries and raw minerals (uranium

especially with AREVA) to world markets. Niger is a member of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and

the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), as well as an eligible country for assistance under the Enhanced

Integrated Framework.

The Nigerien government in its new national development plan (PDES) has highlighted the private sector and trade as major

potential motors of the country’s economic growth. The government has recently requested ITC assistance for the elaboration of

a consolidated program aiming at boosting Niger’s trade performance in specific sectors such as onions and dried meat (kilichi),

especially in regional markets.
