Sao Tome and Principe
1. Country / Territory
Brief
Sao Tome is an island
nation off the Western equatorial coast of Central Africa. Its main export is
cocoa, representing about
95% percent of shipments
overseas, as well as copra, palm kernels and coffee. The country is a member of
the Economic
Community of Central
African States (ECCAS).
Sao Tome has made
tremendous efforts in order to improve its trade environment. As part of the
integrated framework
programme, Sao Tome in
collaboration with ITC and UNDP established a Trade and Investment Promotion
Agency (TIPA) to
assist SMEs in their
export operations. In addition, ITC has contributed to the establishment of the
Single Window for business
registration in Sao Tome
and Principe. The country is also building up its services industries,
especially tourism with the
perspective of
diversifying its economy. ITC aims to consolidate its previous interventions
and strengthen its partnership with
Sao Tome and support the
country in its development endeavours.
